The couple visited the town as part of Prince William's role as patron of Mountain Rescue England and Wales, and participated in training activities such as abseiling, medical support exercises, and a search dog rescue demonstration. Later, they visited Aberfan, a small Welsh village that was struck by tragedy in 1966 when a landslide of coal waste engulfed a local school, killing 144 people, including 116 children. The Queen, Prince Charles, and other members of the royal family have also visited the village in the past to pay their respects. During their visit, the couple met with survivors and members of the Aberfan Wives Group. There were also some lighter moments during the event, such as when a one-year-old boy held up Middleton's miniature £695 Mulberry handbag to his face.
